Lead with the stack a screener searches for

Help desk hiring is matched against a specific environment, so name the systems you actually support instead of offering a general claim of technical support. Robert Half advises leading with the technical skills named in the posting and quantifying them where you can. Operating systems, ticketing platforms, remote support tools, account and identity management, and networking basics are the vocabulary a screener looks for.

Keep the list short and defensible. Certifications such as CompTIA A+ or a professional IT support certificate carry real weight for candidates with little paid experience, and Coursera notes that education and credentials can lead the resume when work history is thin. List only tools you can discuss in an interview; a long inventory you cannot explain is the common mistake.

Write each role as a queue you moved

A help desk resume persuades when it shows throughput and resolution rather than attendance. Replace “provided technical support” with the volume and the outcome: how many tickets you closed in a day or week, how many users you supported, and the resolution or satisfaction measure you can verify. Robert Half's example turns “responsible for 50 user tickets per week” into “resolved 50 user tickets per week.”

Describe what you resolved yourself and what you escalated, because that line signals your level. Name the issue types you handled, such as password and account resets, hardware swaps, connectivity problems, and software installs, and the tools you used to log and close them. A supervisor reading the entry should be able to picture you working the queue in your first week.

Show the service half of the job

Help desk work is customer service delivered in a technical setting, so give communication and problem solving an example. Describe a user you trained, a recurring fault you diagnosed and eliminated, or a frustrated person you walked through a fix calmly. The behavior is the evidence; an adjective such as “excellent communicator” is not.

Robert Half lists cybersecurity awareness and training or mentoring among the abilities that set candidates apart, while Coursera points to customer service, written communication, and collaboration as core skills. Keep the resume to one page, tailor the skills line to each posting, and then read it as a stranger would: can they find your stack, your ticket volume, and one resolution result in the first few seconds?
